"Dr. E. E. Lashbrook of Shellsburg is in Cedar Rapids today, nursing injuries which he received in a lively runaway at Shellsburg yesterday afternoon.
Dr. Lashbrook was returning from a sick call made in the country and was within a half mile of Shellsburg when the neckyoke strap broke. This frightened his team and the horses dashed toward Shellsburg at a mad race. The doctor could get no control over the animals and the team rushed through the town towards the Presbyterian church. In front of the church, the animals crashed into a telephone pole, smashing the buggy and throwing Dr. Lashbrook out. He remained unconscious for over thirty minutes. He was brought to Cedar Rapids and placed under the care of local physicians. His injuries consist of a broken wrist and bruised face."
Dr. Elam Eugene Lashbrook was born January 27, 1882 in Waverly, Bremer County, Iowa to Watson Deralsy Lashbrook and his wife, Alice L. Tyrrell Lashbrook. An unverified source stated that Elam received a MD degree on June 13, 1906 from University of Iowa College of Medicine (his obituary states he graduated in June of 1906).
On October 24, 1906, Elam married Helen Hood Skea in Cedar Rapids, Linn County, Iowa. They had a daughter, Margaret and a son, Thomas.
Elam practiced medicine in Shell Rock (Butler County, Iowa), Des Moines (Polk County, Iowa) , Marble Rock (Floyd County, Iowa) and Estherville (Emmet County, Iowa).
Dr. Lashbrook died on February 26, 1942 in Estherville, Emmet County, Iowa. He and Helen were interred at the Linwood Cemetery, Cedar Rapids, Linn County, Iowa. (This cemetery is shown as Murdock-Linwood Cemetery at Find A Grave. Elam has a memorial there.)
